What is Botox? What is Dysport?

Neuromodulators (Botox and Dysport) are FDA approved prescription medications that contain tiny amounts of the highly purified botulinum toxin protein. When injected, they help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the targeted muscles.

How Do Botox and Dysport Work?

In order for any muscle to contract, nerves must release a chemical messenger called acetylcholine. When injected into a muscle, neuromodulators prevent the release of acetylcholine, which temporarily relaxes the muscle and stops it from contracting. As a result, fine lines and wrinkles begin to relax and soften.

What Areas Does Botox and Dysport Treat?

The most common indication for neuromodulator injections is to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, especially in the upper third of the face (forehead lines, between the brows, and crows feet). However, Botox/Dysport is also now commonly used to treat lines around the mouth, flip the lip, lift the eyebrows, slim the jawline, and improve the appearance of the neck.

Pre-Treatment

Discontinue blood thinning products 1 week prior to treatment (ASA, ibuprofen, supplements)

Post-Treatment

  • Minimal to no downtime is expected, but redness, tenderness, and bruising is a possibility
  • Apply ice if any discomfort is noted post-treatment
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours
  • In-depth post-treatment handout will be given the day of procedure

Who is a Candidate for Botox or Dysport?

Everyone! However, neuromodulators are not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should also not use Botox if you have an active neurological disease.
